With inspiration from the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), Miguel is a young musician, despite his family’s music ban, who looks up to the late musician Ernesto de la Cruz. After Miguel discovers a photo of his great-great-grandfather holding Ernesto’s famous guitar he is left with unanswered questions which leads him to want to learn more about his ancestors, so he goes on a journey to do just that. Miguel’s grandmother destroys his guitar after Miguel shares that he plans to become a musician, he steals Ernesto’s guitar. After strumming it once, Miguel becomes invisible and can interact with relatives visiting from the Land of the Dead- in skeletal dead form. Along the way, Miguel meets Hector, and the two become unexpected friends who unleash the questions, mysteries, and traditions of Miguel’s family.
