DESCRIPTION:For this highly hands-on workshop\, expect to learn strategies to employ while pre-writing\, writing\, and revising documents\, such as journal articles\, your thesis\, or even a short email. This workshop is intended for students who know what they need to write and have done the necessary research but may be struggling with getting words on paper or making sure the words on the paper are the ones they really want. Particular focus will be given to practicing the strategies\, so attendees are highly encouraged to bring a project they are working on. \nSo you’ve got a deadline\, you know you need to write something\, ANYTHING\, but the words just aren’t flowing! You’ve followed writing strategies\, and they just aren’t working! For this highly hands-on workshop\, attendees should expect to learn and practice multiple ways of getting past those invisible barriers to writing. Each contest centers around this year’s common reading book\, Ready Player One\, and has a cash prize of $500. \n\nArtist Award\nThe tangible and virtual worlds inhabited by Wade Watts\, protagonist of this year’s common reading book Ready Player One\, contain a variety of characters\, environments\, scenes and objects both grounded in grim reality and the fantastic world of the OASIS.\nWe invite you to create an artistic rendering of your choice related to this year’s common reading book for an opportunity to win a $500 award. Learn more about the Artist Award\nEssay Contest\nIn the future when Ready Player One takes place\, Wade Watts attends a public school in the virtual reality of the OASIS. Education in the OASIS mimics the classic “classroom” setting while utilizing the innovation and controls of technology. DESCRIPTION:The Professional Development Initiative Presents:\nStress Relief and Mindfulness Workshop\nNovember 16\, 2:00-4:00pm \nGraduate school can be stressful\, competitive\, and extremely demanding. Graduate students experience high rates of burnout and mental health problems from unrelenting workloads and pressure. It takes time and practice to learn to slow down\, do less\, and take care of yourself. Learn the basics of mindfulness and meditation training and how to realistically incorporate these practices into your daily life as a graduate student. We will be discussing mindfulness in a variety of contexts\, with ample time to practice different techniques to enhance your wellbeing. \n***Part of the workshop will be movement-based. Please wear comfortable clothes that will allow you to participate in some gentle yoga postures. Also\, if you have a yoga mat you can bring\, please do!
