SUMMARY:Race Related Trauma & Coping Culturally Specific Mental Health Concerns & Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Ongoing exposures to incidents of bias\, racial injustice\, and discrimination are manifesting as skyrocketing rates of psychological distress. With each traumatic incident has come a renewed call for collective support and a desperate need for change in a society barreling toward irreparable burnout. Colleges and universities across the country are tasked with managing the evolving mental health needs of their students\, staff\, and faculty. However\, leaders often struggle to intentionally acknowledge\, understand\, and respond to how the intersecting identities of their stakeholders uniquely impact their experiences. How can institutions help their campus communities divest from the capitalistic illusion of pushing through their pain for the sake of productivity and not progress? In this talk\, Tekita melds her nursing\, mental health\, and DEI expertise to help participants understand the benefits of utilizing a trauma-informed leadership approach to foster inclusivity\, leadership\, and holistic wellness. Tekita hopes to engage the audience in a provocative dialogue to evaluate their personal commitment to healing and reprioritize the competing forces for sustainable systemic change.
